For example, think about people you know who have a "sway back." No imagine their stomachs. They rarely look flat. So what does breathing have to do with it? A lot, actually. When you inhale, your diaphragm fills up with air, which causes your stomach to expand. Think of a balloon. If you wanted to inflate the balloon, you would fill it up with air, but if you wanted to flatten the balloon, you would let the air out. Your abdominal muscles work the same way. As you inhale, your belly expands, and as you exhale, your deep core muscles press against the diaphragm to expel the air, thereby flattening your belly. If you are inhaling on the return movement of the Ab Lounge XL jackknife, you are only getting the benefits of the curling movement. At best, you are only getting half the benefits of the exercise. At worst, since your abdominal muscles support your back, by keeping them flaccid, you may be causing lower back damage.

It does not require the skill of an Eagle Scout to make a good fire in your fireplace. You just have to use a tried and trusted fire-starting method.

Before you even start to build your fireplace fire, there are four things you'll want to do. First, since the last thing you want is a chimney fire, be sure you have had your chimney inspected and cleaned within the past year. A good cleaning removes the build-up of flammable creosote.

Second, remove all but about an inch of ashes from the floor of your fireplace. A handy way to remove these ashes is with a vacuum specially designed to remove cold ashes from your fireplace.

Third, look up your chimney to make sure the damper is open. A 'throat damper' is located at the bottom of the chimney and will open with a lever or with chain-pulls. If you have a 'top damper,' it's located at the top of the chimney and you open it by pulling a cable.

Fourth, cleared your hearth of anything flammable. You don't want a stray spark to start a fire anyplace other than inside the firebox!

At last you are ready to start making your fireplace fire. Crumble two or three sheets of paper such as that old standby, yesterday's newspaper. Avoid burning plastics or paper with color printing (such as the Sunday comics, magazines, or gift wrapping paper) as they give off toxic fumes. Put the crumbled paper on your fireplace grate. The grate elevates your fire, allowing it to pull in plenty of air to keep a good draft going up the chimney.

Now you have a choice. On top of the crumbled paper, you can put a handful of pine kindling strips (pieces of pine about half an inch wide and about 10 inches long) topped in a criss-cross pile with half a dozen dry pieces of hardwood about 1 inch square by a foot long. The easier way is just to top the crumbled paper with a couple of sticks of fatwood, a natural firestarter. Fatwood comes from the stumps of pine trees, the section of the trees that naturally collects the highly combustible resinous sap or pitch. Purchased in easy-to-use sticks about 8 inches long, fatwood is known as nature's one-match firestarter.

If you are using the fatwood method, add 3 pieces of split, dried firewood on top of the fatwood. If you are using the kindling-hardwood combination, do not add the split firewood yet.

You want the first puffs of smoke from your fireplace fire to go up the chimney, not into your room. So establish an upward flow of air in your flue by crumbling another couple of sheets of paper, lighting them, and holding them up inside the fireplace. This pre-warming gets that upward flow of warm air going.

At last it's time to light your fireplace fire! Light the paper in your grate from each end. If you are using fatwood, the paper will light the fatwood that in turn lights the split firewood.

If you are using the kindling-hardwood method, when the paper lights the kindling and the kindling lights the hardwood, it is time to add 2 or 3 pieces of split firewood to the fire.

As the fire burns, use the tongs from your fireplace tool set to add more split firewood as needed. Place a fireplace screen or spark guard in front of the fire to protect your home and loved ones. Now, sit back and enjoy your fireplace fire!

Expats in Spain and the Cost of Banking

If you decide to go and live Spain you will need to open a Bank Account over there.

As in the UK there are different types of bank accounts. If you have got a Halifax account in the UK then retain it and open one with the Halifax in Spain. All transfers each way are free.

In Spain cash tends to be king. So, you can expect to pay for the privilege of holding credit or debit cards, maybe 1 euro per card per month. Pay in a Spanish cheque and you will pay perhaps 1 euro for that transaction. Transferring money usually costs you, and you might pay 1 - 3 euros per transaction, depending on whether you do it over the Internet or at the bank. And as if it wasn`t bad enough having to pay out for individual items a lot of banks will charge a flat rate fee just for handling your account. This could work out at around 20 euros a year. Negotiating might get some fees reduced.

Basically, for virtually every transaction you will have to pay. Some charges can often be minimize by keeping a certain amount in your account.

Like most things in life it`s worth shopping around and getting the account that is right for you. You could even end up with several bank accounts held at different banks.

Apart from the Spanish banks there are also a number of foreign ones to choose from, including Deutsche Bank, Barclays, Citibank and others those of us in the UK are familiar with. But don`t think that the banks out in Spain are just foreign extensions of their UK counterparts, they are most definitely not.

If you can make any sense of their likely charges that will help when deciding to set your account(s) up, but unlike in the UK clarity isn`t one of their strong points.

You can get a cheque book in Spain but the Spanish prefer to do transactions in cash or credit card. If you visit a bank in Spain then be prepared to have to queue for an hour to get served, as the staff tend to chat on the phone (both mobile and landline) drink tea/coffee, talk to their workmates and until recently, smoke whilst serving you. Internet banking is starting to become more popular, which takes the tedium out of having to go to the branch.

The interest on your savings is low, usually about 1.5% and remember they charge for having an account with them. You can withdraw cash from the cash machines outside of the bank, but take care as robbery and copying of PIN numbers is unfortunately quite common.

Our Current account and Savings account are the opposite over there, so if you open an account make sure it`s what you want. Your passport is essential for opening an account and the paperwork can take about 45 minutes to complete.

The banks open around 8.30 a.m and close at 2 p.m. although in the summer they may open an hour or two at night. When transferring money (usually over £5000) there are several money companies that will do this for you at a better rate than a holidaymaker gets and with no commission. To make comparisons, get a quote from your own bank first (who will always charge a commission from £25-£70 and give a lower exchange rate) but it is a guide.

Finally, avoid going into the red if at all possible. In Spain they are notorious for their high charges for normal day to day transactions. Go overdrawn and you will pay dearly for it. the penalties can be very heavy. Whilst it might not affect too many British out there I do feel sorry for the Spanish who may be unemployed at this time. The banks can and will penalize those unfortunate enough to miss payments, which just makes their already difficult lives even worse, and puts them further in to debt.

What Has Happened to Customer Service by Retail Staff?

In these economically trying times for both businesses and individuals wouldn't you think that protecting our jobs would be a main concern?

Take for instance the situation with post offices in the UK. Over the years there have been thousands of closures of sub-post offices, mostly in the rural areas. This has been done in an effort to cut costs to the Post Office as many branches are losing money. So that local residents wouldn't lose out some post office services have been made available in such places as libraries and pubs. Sadly some postmasters have spent some of their own money in making changes to their shops to improve trade only to be told the post office side is to close. That means they no longer receive a wage from the Post Office along with help toward their premises, so it has resulted in a lot of staff losing their jobs.

Now, without going into the rights and wrongs of post office closures, I would have thought that those who work in existing post offices (and the same applies to all kinds of retail premises, especially those under threat of closure) would do all they can to keep their customers. But that does not seem to be the case. `Customer service` seems a thing of the past.

An example of this is when I went in to my local sub-post office recently. I live in a rural village, so I assume this particular post office could be under threat of closure at any time. There were two customers in front of me, both being served. When one of the customers had finished being served he left, so I was next in the queue. As I was just about to walk to the counter the woman who was then free to serve me answered a phone call. I can understand a business call coming in from say a customer, or their head office. But no, this was a friend (or relative perhaps) asking about the ingredients to put in a cake. The assistant never even acknowledged me, just stood there talking about the cake while I waited. Meanwhile, the other assistant became free so I had to go over to her to get served. Even more annoyingly, while she was getting what I`d asked for, she is then chatting with the first assistant about this cake! I actually got the feeling I was more of an irritation being there as a customer, getting in the way of their social lives.

And even at the end of the transaction the assistant put what I`d bought on the counter without a word, and returned to her conversation with the other worker. Not even a `thank you` or `goodbye`. The first woman ought to have told the caller she would phone her back later when she had no customers waiting. The second assistant should have given me her full attention while I being served by her. Needless to say it isn't somewhere I would choose to go unless I had to on the odd occasion. Yes, I would miss the fact that this post office is convenient and I have to use it sometimes, but if it did close I know that a part of me would say that it serves them right for their lack of good customer service and common courtesy.

What I would say to anyone involved in retail - or in fact any other industry involved in contact with customers - is treat people how you would like to be treated. Bear in mind that people will go elsewhere if you upset them. It takes a long time build up a good reputation, but only a short time for you to get a bad reputation.
